0Here%26rsquo%3Bs%20what%20we%20learned.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe%20ATN%20Gale%20Sail%20is%20a%20fairly%20straightforward%20storm%20sail%20made%20from%20bombproof%208.5-%20or%209.5-oz.%20Dacron%2C%20depending%20on%20the%20size%20of%20the%20boat.%20What%20sets%20it%20apart%20from%20a%20typical%20storm%20jib%20is%20the%20bright%20red%20sleeve%20sewn%20into%20the%20luff.%20To%20rig%20the%20sail%2C%20you%20simply%20attach%20the%20tack%20pennant%20to%20a%20shackle%20below%20the%20furling%20drum%20and%2C%20beginning%20at%20the%20foot%2C%20wrap%20the%20sleeve%20around%20the%20furled%20headsail%2C%20clipping%20the%20piston%20hanks%20to%20their%20corresponding%20grommets%20as%20you%20go.%20Once%20the%20hanks%20are%20secured%2C%20clip%20a%20halyard%20to%20the%20head%20of%20the%20sail%2C%20run%20the%20sheets%20and%20hoist.%20Ideally%20you%20should%20have%20a%20pair%20of%20dedicated%20sheets%20already%20bent%20on%20to%20the%20clew.%20We%20also%20found%20it%26rsquo%3Bs%20a%20good%20idea%20to%20secure%20the%20genoa%20sheets%20to%20the%20base%20of%20the%20forestay%20with%20a%20sail%20tie%20so%20they%20won%26rsquo%3Bt%20get%20in%20the%20way.%0D%0AIn%20admittedly%20benign%20conditions%2C%20we%20had%20no%20trouble%20hoisting%2C%20trimming%20or%20flying%20the%20Gale%20Sail%3B%20however%2C%20we%20did%20find%20it%20was%20a%20little%20tricky%20to%20attach%20the%20piston%20hanks%20to%20their%20grommets%2C%20a%20process%20that%20requires%20two%20hands.%20Factor%20in%20a%20heaving%20foredeck%2C%20cold%20fingers%20and%20plenty%20of%20wind%20and%20water%2C%20and%20this%20task%20could%20prove%20difficult.%20This%20was%20the%20sail%26rsquo%3Bs%20only%20real%20drawback.%20Everything%20else%20was%20a%20breeze.%0D%0A%0D%0ABanner%20Bay%26rsquo%3Bs%20STORM-BAG%20uses%20a%20clever%20integral%20packaging%20system%20to%20stow%2C%20prep%20and%20hoist%20the%20sail.%20Each%20STORM-BAG%20sail%20folds%20into%20a%20bright%20yellow%20case%20that%20resembles%20two%20giant%20cockpit%20cushions%20sewn%20together%20at%20one%20end%26mdash%3Bthink%20of%20a%20wallet%26mdash%3Bwith%20bits%20of%20hardware%20sticking%20out.%0D%0AIn%20actuality%2C%20the%20case%20contains%20two%20identically%20cut%20storm%20jibs%20that%20are%20stitched%20together%20at%20the%20luff%20and%20share%20a%20single%20head%20loop%20and%20tack%20pennant.%20To%20rig%20the%20sail%2C%20you%20simply%20carry%20the%20STORM-BAG%20forward%20and%20wrap%20it%20around%20the%20headstay.%20The%20two%20clews%20are%20then%20clipped%20together%20with%20the%20shackle%20at%20the%20end%20of%20a%20pair%20of%20dedicated%20sheets%20that%20are%20included%20in%20the%20kit.%20A%20halyard%20is%20clipped%20to%20the%20nylon%20head%20loop%2C%20and%20the%20tack%20pennant%20is%20secured.%20The%20sheets%20are%20led%20aft%20to%20the%20requisite%20headsail%20cars%20and%20winches.%20(You%20will%2C%20of%20course%2C%20have%20already%20figured%20out%20the%20correct%20lead%20positions.)%20Once%20solid%20sheet%20tension%20is%20exerted%20on%20the%20bag%26mdash%3Bit%20can%20take%20some%20effort%26mdash%3Bthe%20Velcro%20closures%20on%20the%20case%20rip%20open%20and%20the%20two-ply%20day-glow%20orange%20sail%20can%20be%20hoisted.%20The%20case%20dangles%20from%20the%20foot%20of%20the%20sail.%0D%0A%0D%0ASetting%20and%20using%20the%20sail%20was%20a%20snap.%20We%20found%20that%20the%20sail%20could%20be%20rigged%20and%20hoisted%20with%20minimal%20time%20spent%20on%20the%20foredeck.%20Tacking%20the%20sail%20was%20no%20problem%20and%20trimming%20also%20proved%20easy.%20Because%20the%20sail%20is%20actually%20two%20sails%2C%20each%20made%20of%20slightly%20less%20robust%20cloth%20than%20a%20single%20storm%20jib%2C%20there%20was%20some%20audible%20chatter%20between%20the%20two%20pieces%20of%20sailcloth%2C%20especially%20along%20the%20leech.%20Air%20pressure%20keeps%20the%20two%20sails%20pressed%20against%20each%20other%2C%20but%20chafe%20could%20be%20a%20problem%20over%20time.%20Also%2C%20it%20would%20be%20interesting%20to%20see%20what%20happens%20if%20the%20plies%20separate%20when%20running%20downwind%20in%20a%20strong%20breeze.%0D%0AMy%20concerns%20about%20the%20STORM-BAG%20began%20when%20we%20lowered%20the%20sail.%20After%20each%20use%2C%20the%20sail%20must%20be%20tightly%20flaked%20and%20packed%20into%20both%20sides%20of%20the%20STORM-BAG%2C%20which%20would%20be%20a%20challenge%20on%20a%20small%20deck%20in%20even%20a%20dead%20calm.%20Throw%20in%20subsiding%20storm%20conditions%20and%20the%20job%20would%20be%20impossible.%0D%0AThis%20is%20a%20substantial%20drawback.%20Re-hoisting%20the%20sail%20without%20its%20clever%20packaging%20would%20be%20harder%20than%20hoisting%20a%20standard%20storm%20jib%20due%20to%20the%20fact%20that%20you%26rsquo%3Bd%20have%20to%20contend%20with%20twice%20as%20much%20sail%20area.%20We%20ended%20up%20cramming%20the%20sail%20belowdecks%2C%20where%20it%20nearly%20filled%20our%2034-footer%26rsquo%3Bs%20saloon.%20Back%20on%20solid%20ground%20with%20ample%20room%20to%20work%2C%20we%20were%20able%26mdash%3Bafter%20some%20coaxing%26mdash%3Bto%20flake%20the%20sail%20into%20its%20case%20using%20the%20manufacturer%26rsquo%3Bs%20reference%20marks.%0D%0AWe%20tried%20both%20sails%20in%20a%20gentle%208-knot%20breeze%2C%20which%20made%20setting%20them%20much%20easier%20than%20it%20would%20have%20been%20in%2030-plus%20knots%20of%20wind.%20When%20it%26rsquo%3Bs%20blowing%20hard%20you%20want%20to%20spend%20as%20little%20time%20as%20possible%20on%20the%20foredeck.%20We%20found%20the%20STORM-BAG%20to%20be%20the%20easier%20sail%20to%20rig%2C%20thanks%20to%20its%20clever%20case.%20For%20most%20families%20who%20mainly%20daysail%20or%20make%20short%20passages%2C%20this%20is%20likely%20the%20best%20solution.%20The%20Gale%20Sail%20shines%20on%20longer%20passages%20and%20for%20serious%20offshore%20work.%20It%20is%20not%20as%20easy%20to%20rig%20as%20the%20STORM-BAG%2C%20but%20you%20don%26rsquo%3Bt%20need%20a%20large%20work%20space%20to%20re-flake%20the%20sail%2C%20and%20it%20takes%20up%20considerably%20less%20room.%0D%0AWhichever%20sail%20you%20use%2C%20go%20out%20on%20a%20calm%20day%26mdash%3Bas%20we%20did%26mdash%3Band%20practice%20hoisting%20it%20with%20your%20regular%20crew.%20You%26rsquo%3Bll%20be%20happy%20you%20did%20once%20the%20wind%20pipes%20up%20and%20the%20waves%20turn%20ugly.
