Part%237150%3A%20Gybe%20safely%20with%20Gyb’Easy%2C%20the%20new%20Wichard%20boom%20brake%0D%0AWhy%20a%20boom%20brake%3F%20Gybing%20remains%20one%20of%20the%20most%20challenging%20operations%20on%20a%20sailing%20boat%20even%20for%20experienced%20sailors%20and%20can%20possibly%20generate%20injuries%20and%20material%20damage.%20Gyb’Easy%20is%20an%20efficient%20and%20safe%20solution%20to%20reduce%20such%20risks.%0D%0AConcept%3A%20Thanks%20to%20the%20frictions%20of%20the%20specific%20line%20called%20Gyb’Flex%20passing%20over%20the%20boom%20brake%2C%20the%20boom%20is%20allowed%20to%20gybe%20smoothly%20and%20without%20jerks.%20The%20more%20the%20line%20passes%20over%20the%20openings%2C%20the%20more%20the%20friction%20is%20increased%20and%20hence%20the%20brake%20efficiency.%0D%0ASettings%20of%20the%20Gyb’Easy%3A%20The%20adjustment%20is%20made%20thanks%20to%20the%20tension%20of%20the%20line.%203%20different%20positions%20exist%20for%20a%20better%20adaptation%20of%20the%20mainsail%20and%20wind%20conditions.%0D%0AEasy%20installation%3A%20It%20takes%20a%20few%20minutes%20to%20install%20it%20on%20an%20eye%20strap%20of%20the%20boom.%20Two%20different%20fittings%20can%20be%20implemented%20to%20fit%20with%20all%20the%20deck%20configurations.%0D%0ATechnical%20data%3A%0D%0A%0D%0ACan%20be%20used%20on%20mainsail%20areas%20below%2040%20sqm%0D%0AGyb’Flex%20line%20supplied%20(part%23%3A%207148)%3A%20Length%3A%2016%20m%20%2F%20Diameter%3A%2011%20mm%0D%0AMaterial%3A%26nbsp%3BAnodised%20aluminium%0D%0AWeight%200.600%20Kg%0D%0A%0D%0AApplications%0D%0A%0D%0AGybing%20operations%0D%0A%0D%0ARead%20What%20Other’s%20Say%20(Yachting%20World%20Review%20by%20Pip%20Hare%2C%20July%202015)%0D%0A%0D%0A%0D%0A%0D%0A%22There%20are%20a%20number%20of%20solutions%20on%20the%20market%20to%20help%20control%20a%20gybe%20and%20minimise%20the%20effects%20of%20a%20crash%20gybe%2C%20but%20how%20practical%2C%20effective%20and%20relevant%20are%20they%20to%20the%20average%20cruising%20sailor%3F%0D%0AWith%20this%20in%20mind%20I%20borrowed%20a%20Dufour%20385%20and%20set%20out%20to%20test%20the%20Walder%20boom%20brake%2C%20the%20Wichard%20Gyb%26rsquo%3BEasy%20and%20the%20Sailfuse%20and%20compare%20them%20against%20a%20conventional%20gybe%20preventer%20set%20up%20with%20a%20long%20piece%20of%20line.%0D%0AThe%20day%20we%20chose%20to%20test%20these%20products%20I%20had%20doubts%20as%20to%20how%20much%20I%20would%20learn%20as%20there%20was%20very%20little%20wind%20and%20no%20chance%20for%20them%20to%20strain%20against%20the%20force%20of%20a%20fully%20loaded%20gybe.%20However%2C%20the%20benign%20conditions%20actually%20gave%20me%20a%20chance%20to%20get%20to%20grips%20with%20how%20each%20of%20them%20worked%20and%20assess%20how%20useful%20they%20would%20be%20in%20the%20everyday%20routine%20of%20a%20cruising%20sailor.%0D%0AInstallation%20and%20fitting%0D%0AThe%20first%20thing%20I%20considered%20was%20how%20easy%20each%20product%20was%20to%20fit%20and%20whether%20they%20could%20be%20permanently%20rigged%20or%20would%20have%20to%20be%20fished%20out%20of%20a%20locker%20every%20time%20they%20were%20required.%20There%20is%20often%20a%20reality%20gap%20between%20what%20we%20know%20we%20should%20do%20and%20what%20we%20actually%20do%20where%20effort%20is%20involved.%0D%0AI%20wouldn%26rsquo%3Bt%20want%20to%20leave%20the%20Gyb%26rsquo%3BEasy%20permanently%20installed%2C%20although%20it%20would%20be%20possible%20to%20unthread%20the%20control%20rope%20when%20not%20sailing%20downwind%20to%20allow%20the%20boom%20a%20free%20range%20of%20movement.%20This%20would%20leave%20the%20unit%20dangling%20unrestrained%20under%20the%20boom%20and%20a%20lazy%20rope%20lying%20on%20the%20deck%2C%20which%20I%20would%20not%20be%20happy%20about.%20I%20think%20the%20conventional%20rope%20preventer%20and%20the%20Gyb%26rsquo%3BEasy%20would%20be%20gear%20that%20is%20only%20rigged%20when%20sailing%20downwind.%0D%0AThere%20are%20two%20elements%20to%20setting%20up%20the%20Wichard%20Gyb%26rsquo%3BEasy.%20The%20friction%20that%20controls%20the%20speed%20at%20which%20the%20boom%20will%20swing%20during%20a%20gybe%20is%20created%20by%20passing%20the%20control%20rope%20through%20the%20unit.%20There%20are%20three%20possible%20settings%3A%20more%20turns%20create%20more%20friction.%20The%20boom%20is%20then%20held%20in%20place%20outboard%20by%20applying%20tension%20to%20the%20control%20rope%20on%20the%20lee%20side.%0D%0AWith%20just%20the%20right%20amount%20of%20friction%20and%20the%20leeward%20rope%20tensioned%2C%20the%20Gyb%26rsquo%3BEasy%20produces%20a%20slow%20and%20gentle%20gybe.%20However%2C%20this%20is%20entirely%20governed%20by%20how%20many%20turns%20the%20control%20rope%20takes%20through%20the%20device.%20With%20too%20many%20turns%20the%20boom%20is%20pinned%20out%2C%20which%20can%20only%20be%20corrected%20by%20letting%20the%20control%20rope%20go.%20Too%20few%20turns%20and%20the%20boom%20will%20still%20fly%20across%20the%20cockpit%20at%20speed.%0D%0AWhen%20we%20set%20the%20Gyb%26rsquo%3BEasy%20up%20properly%20it%20did%20work%20well%2C%20but%20over%20the%20length%20of%20a%20passage%20in%20changing%20conditions%20you%20would%20need%20to%20leave%20the%20cockpit%20to%20thread%20or%20unthread%20friction%20to%20balance%20changes%20to%20sail%20size%20or%20conditions.%0D%0AThe%20Gyb%26rsquo%3BEasy%20comes%20with%20a%20Gyb%26rsquo%3BFlex%20control%20rope%20and%20the%20warning%20that%20performance%20is%20not%20guaranteed%20if%20a%20different%20rope%20is%20used.%20I%20presume%20this%20is%20down%20to%20optimum%20results%20requiring%20a%20rope%20of%20specific%20diameter%2Fsoftness%2C%20but%20the%20rope%20supplied%20was%20not%20long%20enough%20to%20reach%20the%20cockpit%20winches%20on%20both%20sides%20of%20our%20Dufour%20385.%0D%0AHow%20to%20fit%0D%0A1%26nbsp%3B%26nbsp%3B%26nbsp%3B%26nbsp%3B%26nbsp%3B%20Fit%20the%20Gyb%26rsquo%3BEasy%20on%20a%20fixed%20boom%20bale%20forward%20of%20the%20kicker.%20This%20was%20not%20possible%20on%20our%20test%20so%20we%20used%20Dyneema%20strops.%0D%0A2%26nbsp%3B%26nbsp%3B%26nbsp%3B%26nbsp%3B%26nbsp%3B%20Fix%20two%20blocks%20at%20deck%20level%20in%20line%20with%20the%20shroud%20base.%0D%0A3%26nbsp%3B%26nbsp%3B%26nbsp%3B%26nbsp%3B%26nbsp%3B%20Run%20the%20supplied%20Gyb%26rsquo%3BFlex%20rope%20from%20the%20cockpit%2C%20forward%20through%20one%20block%2C%20over%20the%20coachroof%20to%20the%20other%20and%20then%20back%20to%20the%20cockpit.%0D%0A4%26nbsp%3B%26nbsp%3B%26nbsp%3B%26nbsp%3B%26nbsp%3B%20Thread%20a%20bight%20of%20the%20control%20rope%20through%20the%20holes%20in%20the%20Gyb%26rsquo%3BEasy%20and%20over%20the%20stump%20at%20the%20top.%20Increase%20turns%20through%20the%20unit%20to%20increase%20friction.%0D%0AVerdict%0D%0AThe%20one%20benefit%20the%20Wichard%20Gyb%26rsquo%3BEasy%20has%20over%20a%20regular%20rope%20preventer%20is%20that%20it%20can%20be%20set%20to%20allow%20a%20gentle%20gybe%20and%20not%20just%20to%20pin%20the%20boom%20out%2C%20which%20in%20itself%20can%20present%20a%20risk.%20However%2C%20I%20would%20not%20want%20to%20leave%20it%20permanently%20installed%20and%20it%20would%20need%20regular%20adjustment%20when%20conditions%20change%22%0D%0A%26nbsp%3B
